Podcast Advent Day 6: Why Won't You Date Me
The conversations are addictive because they're (seemingly) unfiltered and fun! Nicole is saying what many people are thinking and will pick up any BS her guests are putting down so the two of them can be more explicit together.
But what makes her such a good podcast host is her curiosity with her guests to learn more about their lifetime experience, beyond whatever brings them through the podcast junket at the time (although many of her guests are just cool people with nothing brand new to promote). Nicole makes people feel comfortable and it sounds like listening to two old friends chatting over coffee or a cocktail.
I started listening to Nicole during the pandemic, and she helped me feel sane in a very strange time. Not only for the world but for me as I was starting to date for the first time as an adult with a fully formed pre-frontal cortex. Hearing Nicole yap with friends about sex and sexuality was just what I needed, maybe even healing, and the perfect companion to laundry at the laundromat.
The episode I'm sharing is particularly special as it features one of my favourite authors - Roxanne Gay. The two chat about Fatphobia and racism as Black female public figures, and challenge the audience to do something (some of them) probably don't do very often - listen to two women who look like them and hear their experiences.
Hopefully this episode is the beginning of pressing play on this series!
